Paci no more

So we finally got P off the pacifier the beginning of last month. Before he was totally fine with only using it during nap time and for bed but he was getting to the point where if he saw it, it needed to be in his mouth. I didn't want a kid that NEEDED a pacifier so it was time. One day I cut all the tops off his pacis but one as a back up in case it wouldn't go over so well first night. It was the night of drews bday and we had ppl over later than we should have so P was extra tired. He grabbed the cut paci and put it in his mouth. No good. He reached for another one confused. And went through another 2 before kind of crying "my paci!"  After I told them they were broken he tried again then admitted they were broken. He was kind of sad for a few mins. We proceeded to get him for bed. He tried using is sippy of water as a paci. Didn't really work. The. He stuck his first pointer finger in his mouth and seemed content by that. I left the "broken" pacis out in his room so he could still see the . The next morning he fussed for a sec a d said they were broken. Then he walked them to the trash and threw them away. Easy as that. He'd still bring them up in conversation for a couple days and ask "paci go?" Then I'd ask him the same thing back and he'd tell me they were in the trash and broken.
He finally realized his thumb made more sense than his pointer. It's really his blanket that brings on the thumb sucking. He knows he's not supposed to suck his thumb during the day. But he'll still do it from time to time. I don't care so much at night since it falls out once he's asleep.
